The slouchy old sofas of your dorm-room days have no place in your current space. There's an impressive array of style-forward futons available now, and some of these seats may not even look convertible at first glance — which makes them all the more appealing.

If you want to host overnight guests right in your living room or home office without overhauling your whole space or breaking the bank, you need to check out these smartly designed futons.

    What to Consider

The main thing to consider is where and how you will be using your futon. Their smaller size and convenient convertibility make them more appropriate for placement in a spare room as opposed to serving as your main living room seat. Even the comfiest futons may be a bit firmer than a regular sofa because they tend not to have removable, foam-and-spring-filled seat cushions.

Also, these are not sleeper sofas with hidden mattresses tucked inside the frames. Futons have much simpler hinge mechanisms that can turn an upright seat into a flat, horizontal one. And for this reason, they may not be appropriate for accommodating more than one adult-sized sleeper at a time.

These petite seats are ideal for occasional hosts to provide additional sitting and sleeping room for their guests. And even when not in use, they complete a space beautifully with their crisp tailoring, soft upholstery, and cheery colors.

Here are the best futons and convertible sofas that can easily turn into a bed at a moment's notice.

Reviewers love that it doesn’t look like your average sofa bed, with one person saying, “The quality of the product exceeded my expectations. The sofa bed is well made and solidly built. The sofa sits three comfortably, and when utilizing the bed portion, you get a relaxing, firm feeling.”

Our tester Danielle St. Pierre tried out Coddle's Toggle sofa and found the setup process to be incredibly quick and easy, taking about 15 minutes to snap together. She said, “Overall, I give this couch 8 out of 10 stars for comfort and would recommend it for anyone who’s looking for a multifunctional couch.”

The retro-chic Better Homes & Gardens Nola Sofa Bed elevates a space with its velvet upholstery. Its split back cushions recline to become a temporary, near-full-sized sleeping bed, which is significantly bigger than what the other picks on this list provide.

This is the futon to get if you’re planning to put it in your main living space. Its seat cushions are touted by reviewers as being far more plush and comfortable than other models, which can be quite firm. It also has a pair of legs hidden in the back, so when you fold it down into a bed, your guest will have a super sturdy sleep space.

As one enthusiastic reviewer sums up, “I’ve had this couch for about three weeks, and I LOVE IT! The color is exactly what I wanted, too.”

Nothing beats the luxe look and feel of a genuine leather sofa, but this one comes very close. The faux-leather Queer Eye Collection Liam Sofa Bed is not only a great deal, but it works great in any space, too. The back of the sofa hinges down to lie completely flat, turning the seat into an approximate twin XL-sized bed.

This futon is definitely a step up from other models in its price range, even if it's not quite as cushy as a regular sofa. According to one reviewer, “The faux leather is higher quality than I expected, definitely has more of a softness to it than anticipated. The seat is comfortable, and the back is a little stiff — but with a couple of pillows, this couch does the job!”

It's not a cushy seat, although reviewers with small spaces in need of a convertible sofa say that it suits their needs perfectly. Says one person, "The material is nice, and the assembly is very easy. It is pretty comfortable to sit on, and yes, I see why it could use a bit more cushion ... It's firm, so you don't sink in it."
