The Best Galaxy Star Projectors for a Dreamy Ambiance Unlike Any Other

💫✨So even indoors, you can sleep under the stars. ✨💫

My childhood bedroom ceiling was covered corner to corner with those plastic glow-in-the-dark stars that you install with putty. Each night I would zone out and be absolutely enamored by their glow and would think about how badly I wanted to win the trip to Space Camp awarded as the grand prize on one of the ’90s Nickelodeon game shows until I’d eventually drift off to sleep.

Kids these days sure have an upgrade on my crappy plastic stars thanks to galaxy star projectors. These inexpensive and highly entertaining gadgets are satisfying for people of all ages. They use LED and laser lighting to create colorful light effects that resemble starry night skies and nebula clouds that transport you to new dimensions. Some models allow users to change the colors to precisely match their mood.

If you’re in search of the best galaxy projector that provides an ethereal glow with stunning galaxies, swirling stars, and captivating constellations, you'll find them all here.

These mesmerizing projectors make an excellent gift and are perfect for entertainers looking to create extra ambiance, as well, but there are a few things to keep in mind before making a purchase.

What to Consider

Accuracy

There are a number of scientifically accurate star projectors, such as the SEGA Homestar, that my colleagues at Popular Mechanics endorse because they display true star clusters and essentially turn your room into a mini-planetarium. Although we admire projectors like these, we haven’t featured any of them in this guide because they’re harder to use, and are not what most people are looking for when searching for a galaxy star projector. The models we’ve highlighted are more novelty items than scientific tools, and help create ambiance.

Adjustable Settings

Be sure to pay attention if the projector has adjustable settings that control the projector’s intensity, its brightness, and its rotation speed. If you’re shopping for someone who really likes to fine-tune settings, you should also shop for a model that lets you change colors. Having adjustable brightness is especially nice to have in case you want a dimmer projection to fall asleep to.

Extra Features

Several galaxy smart projectors do more than just project lights on a blank wall or ceiling. Some double as white noise machines or Bluetooth speakers, and many can sync to your music to create a cool light show that complements your tunes. If you’re tech-savvy, we recommend the Liuyang Galaxy Projector, because it's highly customizable and can be controlled with a companion smartphone app or with your voice using the Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa smart home platforms.

How We Chose

With hundreds of star projectors to choose from that look nearly identical despite different product names, shopping for the best, most reliable projectors can be as overwhelming as trying to find the constellation “Lynx.” I’ve researched and compared 40 models and scoured the internet reading reviews written by space enthusiasts from publications such as Popular Science and Space.com. I also compared reviews from consumers and two of our editors at Best Products, put a few models to test, too.

Our recommend projectors are fantastical, fun, and are the best way to bring the galaxies into your home. So, shop our five favorite projectors below.

Pros
  • One of the few that can be controlled with your voice
  • Has a companion app that lets you change the colors and effects
  • Its stand lets you adjust where the projected image will be displayed
  • Has a built-in timer
Cons
  • We wish the cord were a little longer

After seeing one too many ads on Twitter trying to sell me a cool galaxy projector, I caved and did what I do before making any purchase — obsessively read reviews, researched, and compared dozens upon dozen of products until I found the best one. This projector is the best for a number of reasons.

For starters, I love how it lets me easily adjust its settings from a smartphone app. I can adjust the speed of its rotation so it doesn't look too dizzying, play around with the colors, change the motion of the nebulas, and turn off the stars if I want to create a different vibe.

Another nice perk is that this is one of the few star projectors that let you set timers and schedules to turn it off or on automatically. I hid the projector on a shelf and made it power on right when the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day. Even though it just added some extra ambiance, it made the moment much more memorable, and my friends were so wonderstruck.

Pros
  • It's easy to adjust through the various light effects
  • Has adjustable brightness
Cons
  • Doesn’t have an app or voice control

Like our best overall pick, the Sky Lite lets users download a companion app that makes it easy to set just the right mood. You can adjust its brightness, the lighting effects, and change the color of the auroras.

The Sky Lite star projector has a useful rotation feature that's engrossing, and a shutoff timer so your giftee can have it automatically power itself off just before they drift off to sleep.

Testers at Space.com said the BlissLights Sky Lite projector is notable for its easy setup, its compact design, and vivid and bright colors.

“Unlike other models we tested we found it to be near silent in operation, great if you’re using it to get to sleep or whilst watching a film,” said reviewer Tantse Walter.

Pros
  • Syncs with the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa
Cons
  • Doesn’t offer any adjustments for the pattern of the nebula

Most galaxy projectors have little green laser dots that act as stars that spin and dance around as the projector casts the galaxy image on your ceiling. I found myself turning these off on occasion since they are distracting.

The Sky Lite Evolve is one of the few projectors that eliminates the “star feature” entirely since it doesn’t have a green laser. This projector offers a subtle light that casts an incredible-looking nebula. We appreciate its compact design and thanks to its spherical shape the projector offers an impressive coverage area of up to 900 square feet.

Pros
  • You can cycle between over 30 different light effects
  • Doubles as a white noise machine
  • The stars and auroras can synchronize and change to the beat of music
Cons
  • There are only a couple of built-in white noise sounds

The Northern Galaxy Light Aurora projector is the perfect gift for entertainers who enjoy creating a fun atmosphere for friends and loved ones. It even has built-in Bluetooth, so it plays music and its lights sync to the beat.

Tester Sean Abrams has owned (and loved) this projector for several months now. “It’s so much fun! We turn it on at night while watching movies or listening to books,” he said.

Compared to other models, this one lets users pick from 33 different light effects including 16 different northern light effects and five separate speed and brightness levels. It even doubles as a white noise machine and plays relaxing sounds including, rain, campfire, and waves. The galaxy night light projector comes with a convenient remote control for adjusting modes, volume, setting timers, and controlling power.

Mooyran Star Projector Galaxy Night Light

Pros
  • Unique design
  • Includes a remote control, so you can control it from afar
Cons
  • Stars don't change colors

This astronaut-shaped projector casts engrossing and expansive galaxies onto its surroundings. It can glow steadily, slowly rotate, or switch between seven different colors. We like that the nebula and star silhouettes can be used simultaneously or separately.

The astronaut, which is also available in black, features an adjustable head, arms, and includes a removable base. It comes with a remote control that allows users to adjust the light pattern, brightness, and timer. The timer will definitely come in handy for parents who want to use it in a child's bedroom or nursery so it'll turn itself off shortly after their little one drifts off to sleep.
