The Best E-Readers and Kindles to Gift Your Favorite Bookworm
After hundreds of hours of reading, here are the e-readers our book-obsessed editors recommend.
Editor's Note: We reviewed our current product picks to ensure they are in stock, available, and accurately priced. We are confident that these are the best e-readers on the market as of April 2023. If you're looking for the best overall e-reader and are ready to add to cart now, we recommend the 11th Generation Kindle Paperwhite. For this most recent update, we added a few new models from Amazon and Kobo plus we considered a new e-reader from Barnes & Noble. Although some readers may appreciate that it uses physical buttons for page-turning, we've omitted the Nook GlowLight 4E from our lineup because it has lesser battery life, lacks a waterproof construction, and has a less responsive touchscreen.
E-books are the best way to read (besides, you know, the good ol’ hardcover). Unlike smartphones and tablets that have bright and crisp LCD or OLED displays, e-book readers feature E-Ink screens that are solely developed for long reading sessions, with power efficiency in mind. They also are much more incognito since the world won’t be able to see the cover of whatever it is you’re reading.
Whether you're gifting an e-reader to yourself, a student, or an avid reader, the giftee will immediately appreciate the benefits of these tablet-like devices without having to deal with strained eyes or the harmful effects of blue light from using a smartphone or tablet.
I’ve personally gifted my significant other, both of my parents, and my sister an e-reader. To make the gift even more personalized and special, I recommend opening it up and loading it with books that you know they will love or books that you love. Not only does it mean they can hop right in and get sucked into a good book, they don’t have to deal with the stress of buying books and charging the e-reader, and it gives you both something to share and discuss.

What to Consider
Ecosystem + File Support
Currently, there are three major players on the market for e-book readers: Amazon, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble via its Nook line of devices. It's worth noting that each of the three vendors offers a free reading app for smartphones and tablets, so you can explore its library of titles and perks before buying.
All Kindle e-books you purchase from Amazon are stored in a proprietary file format that's exclusive to Amazon devices — although the Kindles support a more common .MOBI format, too. EPUB files are also a common file format that's essentially the book equivalent of an MP3. Kobo e-readers, on the other hand, can handle 15 formats — with the exception of Amazon's .AZW format. This means you can easily read PDFs, text files, comics, and even graphic novels on your Kobo e-reader.
Battery Life
E-ink displays use relatively little power, meaning the battery life for all of our recommended e-readers is quite long. The best e-readers offer up to 6 weeks of use on a single charge, while more inexpensive e-readers last about 2 weeks less before needing charging.
Features
Just in the last three years, e-readers have improved significantly. They feature higher-resolution displays, offer support for Bluetooth for listening to audiobooks, and some are even waterproof. A quick note on the latter: Most manufacturers claim their e-readers are either water-resistant or waterproof.
Water-resistant means the e-readers can survive small splashes of water, rain, sweat, a drop in the snow, or a spill. On the other hand, waterproof devices can withstand being completely submerged or soaked in water, giving you peace of mind during those inevitable accidental drops in a body of water, like a pool or toilet. You should also pay attention to useful features like adjustable backlighting, water-resistance ratings, and Bluetooth.
For a reading experience you can take on the go (no more hardback books to lug around in your tote or carry-on!), we've rounded up the best e-readers on the market to buy for yourself or to give as a gift.
