    Are Electric Blankets Safe?

A word on safety: Electric throw blankets emit extremely low, non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as they heat up. Many standard household appliances also emit EMFs, and they're generally considered low-risk for the majority of the population to use. However, because of these EMFs, the fragility of the electric wires inside of the blanket, and the prolonged heat exposure that these products provide, certain users may want to proceed with caution.

Those who have circulation issues or nerve damage, as well as those who are pregnant, are recommended to avoid the use of electric throw blankets. It's a good idea to avoid using a heated blanket with small children and pets around, too. Also make sure that your heated throw blanket is a top layer only: Don't sit on these blankets or crush them in any way because their internal heating mechanisms may get damaged.

Finally, while some of these blankets are indeed made for layering onto your bed, try to avoid going to sleep with your heated blanket on — preheating your bed with a blanket before climbing in is a much safer idea. Luckily, for total peace of mind, every heated throw blanket in this guide has an auto-off function, and we've denoted the maximum run time for each one.

No matter what your specifications are, you can find an electric throw blanket that matches your needs here. Check out our guide to the best-heated throw blankets that'll give you all the warm and fuzzy feels.

    Pros
    • Heats quickly and evenly
    • Machine-washable
    Cons
    • Wires can be felt inside of the fabric

One side is silky while the other side is sherpa, so any way that you want to cuddle with the Sunbeam Heated Throw Blanket is a win.

The editor-favorite electric throw blanket is equipped with three different heat settings delivered through its ThermoFine warming technology, though it feels almost exactly like a normal blanket. As our tester Zarah Kavarana says in her review, “Though you can feel the wires inside the fabric, they’re fine enough to prevent poke-age or any inflexible feel. In fact, I was pleased to find that the blanket didn’t mold to my body any differently than a regular one.”

We're naming this as our best overall heated throw blanket because of its comfy feel, exceptional warmth, and machine-washable convenience for a reasonable price.

Eddie Bauer Smart Heated Electric Throw Blanket

    Pros
    • Uses app instead of clunky control panel to operate heat
    • Machine-washable
    Cons
    • Smart tech makes it complicated for some users

If you're a tech junkie and are already using your smartphone and smart speaker to power everything from your vacuum, grill thermometer, and home security system, why not have them control your heated blanket, too?

The Eddie Bauer Smart Heated Electric Throw Blanket can be turned on and off via a built-in switch, but it also connects to the RH Sleep app to adjust the temperature. The gadget-heads who've reviewed this product love it, but the tech-averse ... not so much.

Regardless, its chic pattern and soft, not-too-heavy feel make it a fantastic couch accouterment for anyone to enjoy.

    • Plugs into 12-volt outlet for keeping warm in the car
    • Feels soft and fleecy but not too hot
    Cons
    • Not machine-washable
    • Doesn't shut off automatically

The Stalwart Electric Fleece Blanket is a genius polyester fleece throw that plugs into your car's 12-volt outlet (aka the cigarette lighter) to keep you, your passengers, or even your pet warm and toasty while your vehicle takes its time heating up. As one reviewer notes, “The heater in our car went out in the winter, so this was great to have for the kids to share in the back seat.”

Just keep in mind that, unlike nearly all other products in this guide, it doesn't have an auto shut-off timer, and it’s not machine-washable.

    Pros
    • Offers different textures on either side
    • Thin wires are barely detectable through the fabric
    • Machine-washable
    Cons
    • Short power cord

The L.L.Bean Wicked Cozy Heated Throw certainly lives up to its name. One side of this polyester layer is plushier and smooth, while the other has slim ribbing channels for a little textural interest.

While some reviewers say that the power cord is on the shorter side, many like that the wires of this even-heating blanket are extra thin and less likely to be felt through the fabric. As one person says, “It has given me the chance to sit out on my porch well before I would’ve been able to otherwise with the weather. It is super soft, very easy to use, and very warm!”

    Pros
    • Lightweight; not a hot and heavy layer
    • Machine-washable
    Cons
    • Laundering may impact its furry texture

Combining the best of all cozy worlds, the Beautyrest Zuri Oversized Heated Faux Fur Throw from Beautyrest looks and feels like a regular faux-fur blanket. However, this one is outfitted with three heat settings to kick the comfort factor into overdrive.

Many reviewers note that this heated blanket is on the thinner side — this is described as either a good or bad thing, depending on the user's preferences. For that reason, it's a better pick for those who want a light layer with a little extra heat from time to time.

    Pros
    • Extra-big sizes are perfect for sharing
    • Machine-washable
    Cons
    • Fleece doesn't feel as luxe as sherpa or faux-fur blankets

Sunbeam’s electric throw blankets are top-of-the-line as far as their comfort and heating quality are concerned. The Sunbeam Quilted Fleece Heated Blanket looks like a big throw, but it comes in a bed-appropriate size. Just keep in mind that its fleece texture isn’t quite as silky as the faux-fur models.

Its easy-to-use remote is just one big knob that you can turn to adjust the heat to one of 10 settings. And those heat settings are certainly effective. As one reviewer says, “We got tired of heating the whole house to keep us warm. These blankets do the job. They heat up quickly and stay warm.”

It features three heat-level settings and a 2-hour auto-off feature. It’s also plenty warm without being switched on; as one reviewer says, “The material is amazingly soft to the touch, and that’s what I love most about it.” Just keep in mind that this poncho runs small and may not fully cover everyone wearing it.

    • No stiff wires in the blanket texture
    • Machine-washable
    Cons

We wouldn't blame you for wanting to take your electric throw blanket into bed. Luckily, the Alwyn Home Shafer Heated Comforter Blanket is made for exactly that!

Available in sizes twin through king, this quilt-style blanket is equipped with 10 heat settings and can run for up to 10 hours at a time. The queen and king sizes also come with dual controllers, so you and your bed partner don't have to compromise on how toasty you want it.

One reviewer calls it “A nice thick blanket, can hardly feel the wires at all. Even heat, no ‘hot spots’ I can tell so far. It works perfectly inside my linen duvet cover. Would buy it again.”

Again, it’s recommended that you turn off the electric throw blanket before sleeping. But if you do plan to use this blanket in bed, remember to always set it on the lowest heat and shortest timer settings.

    BEDSURE Electric Heated Bed Blanket

    Pros
    • Silky, wavy texture feels incredible
    • Digital control panel is easy to operate and not clunky
    • Machine-washable
    Cons
    • Laundering may impact its silky texture

Pairing an irresistible raised-stripe texture with all of the heat control your always-cold self desires, the Bedsure Electric Heated Bed Blanket may be the layer you live in from the first frost to spring's thaw.

Available in two sizes, it offers numerous heat and time settings, all from its easy-to-read controller. This panel also detaches, allowing you to machine-wash the blanket. However, since it may lose some of its silkiness when laundered, you might be better off spot-cleaning or hand-washing this blanket to ensure its longevity.
